Title: Infiltrator - Part Sixteen
Author: [personal profile] magicom
Rating: Maybe PG at the worst.
Disclaimer: I don't own Torchwood or any of its characters. No money being made.
Pairing/Characters: Jack, Ianto, (Jack/Ianto), Gwen, Doctor Rupesh Patanjali, Johnson.
Spoilers: Takes into consideration all of S1, S2 and Day One of CoE.
Summary: As a whole: He's a doctor... they need a doctor. What if the 456 fuckery didn't happen and Torchwood actually did recruit Rupesh, who was trying to get the gig to spy on them for Johnson, as discussed in Day One? This part: A bit of disarray.
Warnings: None to speak of.
Notes: Takes place starting just before and during CoE: Day One and goes AU from there onwards.

Rupes‎h found Jones irritably sorting bays in the archive, but he allowed the doctor to check his injuries and treat the ones that needed it, even if it was only disinfectant to stop any cuts and scrapes getting septic. Rupesh didn't attempt to make conversation, though he did note - silently, to himself - that Jones' interrogator wore a ring.

Once he was finished his official duty in the matter, he cleared out, leaving Jones to his.

He was down in the medical bay when he heard Gwen catch up with Jones, who must have emerged from the archive for sleep or sustenance, because he'd been a man on a mission when Rupesh was down there.

"Ianto, don't do this, you can't put this all on him. Does any of us want to lose any more friends?"

Rupesh could practically see her face in his mind, all big eyes and tender gaze.

"Some of us don't want their deaths to mean nothing," Jones told her. "Do you know how long a Torchwood field agent lasts, on average? Because I do. If I'm going to be another Torchwood statistic, I want it to bloody well mean something. Jack knows that. We agreed that protecting this planet has to come first. We committed to that long before we ever had any other... arrangements."

"Arrangements. Deals. Sounds romantic," she responded flatly.

"It's none of your business, actually," Ianto retorted. "What we call it..."

"Or don't call it."

"Doesn't concern you," Jones continued forcefully.

"Jack..."

"Jack is the head of the Torchwood Institute, and he can't give away its dangerous secrets to lunatics for the life of a junior field agent."

"Or his boyfriend?" Her tone was so intentionally innocent, it was clearly meant to be a provocative remark and the brief but sudden silence that followed it suggested it had worked in some way.

"Or anything," he told her quietly, then Rupesh heard his feet on the grating moving away.

"How long are you going to stay cross with him?" Gwen called after what must have been his retreating back.

"That doesn't concern you, either," Jones called back.

Rupesh lingered, quietly, in the medical bay, staring at his screen, but not really seeing it. Gwen was as much the humanist as he'd noted, but the inscrutable Jones, it turned out, was a Believer. He could end up being even more of a threat to Johnson than Harkness, Rupesh mused.

The question was whether to tell her that.‎
